New Cydonian images by the Mars Global Surveyor

Not surprisingly, there was considerable popular interest in the upcoming MGS images. When asked about the "Face," however, NASA scientists did little more than state that if the spacecraft happened to fly over the region, they would photograph it.

Clearly, among scientists, the idea of making a special effort to photograph the "Face" was viewed as little more than a waste of time. Among "Face" aficionados, however, NASA's lack of interest quickly was seized upon as a government cover-up.

The reality was that over the course of the two year mapping mission of MGS, the plain would likely be photographed several times. Ultimately, it would not be long before the first images were released to the public.
